The Tale of a Telephoto Lens

Telephoto lenses can be quite big and heavy, and they are usually difficult to carry around, especially through the airports. However, they are also very rewarding to use, as they can help to create very compelling images. I admire telephoto lenses because they help me to photograph the most interesting elements of a landscape, as opposed to putting all the elements in one frame. I recently participated in a photo workshop in the Canadian Rockies where I frequently made use of my 100-400mm lens, and I wanted to share some images captured with this lens.

These rock flours are carried to Lake Louise by melting glaciers, and they create a unique turquoise color

In the Rockies, each mountain peak is so unique and eventful, and I used my telephoto lens to emphasize on them and bring out their details.

Heavy wind is blowing off snow from the peak just before sunrise

First light catching the peak is always very soothing to the eye

These trees were far away but quite noticeable

Interestingly, there were some compositions not too far away, but still a telephoto lens helped to isolate them from their surroundings.

These ice crystals that formed overnight were getting splashed by the waves of Lake Abraham

Snow forming up on icy lake

Sometimes the ice would crack open and create very unique patterns

Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude towards the organizers of the photo workshop, @nick_fitzhardinge and @kahliaprilphoto, for helping me create these images.
